Crown Prince Frederick |
1786-German Prussian monarch
Frederick II died. He was believed to be bisexual. He is best
known for his brilliance in military campaigning and organization of Prussian
armies. He became known as Frederick the Great and many historians have considered whether he was homosexual or bisexual (and perhaps possibly celibate),
and his relationship with Hans Hermann von Katte was widely speculated in the
Prussian court to be romantic. After Katte's execution by Frederick's
father, Frederick was forced to marry Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Bevern,
with whom he had no children. He immediately separated from his wife when
Frederick William I died in 1740. In later years, Frederick would pay his wife formal
visits only once a year.
William S Burroughs |
1954- Some people say that William Burroughs was the greatest
writer that ever lived. After all, here was a man who was a leader of "The
Beat Generation", a friend of Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, a man whose
novel "Naked Lunch" helped break literature out of its traditional
forms and removed the final barriers of censorship in America. Others say his writing is absolute nonsense, and if there was a man who
represented all that was negative and destructive of his generation, it was
Bill Burroughs. Naked Lunch was first published by Olympia Press in July 1959. In 1954 Burroughs wrote
to another beat generation-author Jack Kerouac about how his relationship with his Spanish lover a teenage boy called Kiki who was helping him get through withdrawal symptoms from drugs in Tangier. In 1955 Burroughs wrote "I am tired of monogamy with Kiki. Dryden speaks of the Golden Age, “Ere one to one was cursedly confined.” When Burroughs left Tangier, Africa temporarily in 1957, Kiki took up with a
Cuban singer, who killed him after catching him in bed with a woman.
1967 Thursday “I thought it was a particularly sadistic assault”,
city Police Chief C.F. Trost
said, in describing a strong arm robbery and
attack of 4 Salt Lake area youths in Memory Grove. The robbers netted
approximately $4.50 in their assault on David Trimble,17, of 9191 South 1150
West, Val Jenkins, age 17, 8679 South 1700 West, Comer Smith, age 17, of 8594
South 1700 West and Baldemar Miles, age 18 years of 157 South 1300 East. He said they told Officer Trost they were sitting
in their car about 1:30 a.m. when 3 men got out of an auto and demanded their
money and when told they had none, suddenly started kicking them. One victim quoted one assailant: “Okay, now!”
and said he then kicked 2 of the youths.
The assailants then struck a 3rd youth across the jaw with a bottle and
the 4th was struck and kicked repeatedly.
Officer Trost reported. An on
coming car frightened the attackers away. (SLTribune 08/18/67 Col. A29)

1967-The Third National Planning Conference of Homophile
Organizations was held in Washington D.C.NACHO was hampered by internal conflicts from the beginning.
Fault lines formed over membership, credentialing and voting rights, with East
coast organizations favoring a more formal membership process and West coast
activists wishing for a more casual members policy. Mattachine New York and
ONE, Inc. refused to attend the 1967 conference in New York because of these
concerns. Lesbians were also concerned that the male-dominated leadership was
giving short shrift to women-specific issues.

it was a hotbed of homosexuality. Police photographed everyone in attendance as

1979 Salt Lake Parks Plagued by Lewd Conduct by
Joe Cosanzo Desret News- Joggers see the men gathering at the east loop men’s
restroom in Liberty Park as early at 6 a m. From then on the restroom is no
place for children, according to a Salt Lake City vice squad detective. During
the past two months Det. Larry Checketts has been involved in the arrest of
more than forty men charged with obscene conduct in park restrooms. Most arrests have been made in Liberty Park,
Pioneer Park, and Jordan Park, In one day last week vice squad officers
arrested a half dozen men in the Liberty Park east loop restroom. The problem has become so serious according
to Checketts that a person would have to be in any park restroom for less than
ten minutes before witnessing lewd behavior. “Unfortunately many families using
the park are not aware of the incidents and they send young boy into the rest
rooms,” Checketts said. “I’ve seen two small boys five and the
other three walk
into the east loop restroom to find three men engaging in lewd conduct in front
of them,” the officer said. He said two boys were raped in the Pioneer Park
restroom last year. The incidents are increasing because the restrooms have
apparently become well known “contact points” for homosexual activity.” The
graffiti on the Liberty Park east loop restroom for example notifies
individuals that activity begins early in the morning,” Checketts said. In addition, vice squad officers have
obtained underground homosexual publications that list the east loop rest room
as a contact point. “You could go to any restroom in the three parks and
encounter that activity,” Checketts said. “I would say Liberty, Jordan and
Pioneer are equally bad.” The detective said the number of incidents has increased dramatically this year, but enforcement has also increased. Vice officers randomly select a park rest
room for observation. As the arrest have increased, the officers have noticed
“look outs” posted in front of some of the rest rooms. However, Checketts said
that has hampered arrests, because most men arrested during the past two months
had not been picked up before. “In the
winter, the activity moves into the shopping mall restrooms,” Checketts said.
Checketts said that most of the men he ahs arrested are typical family men with
wife, children, and good jobs. Deseret News B-1 and 2

1982-Texas's sodomy law was repealed by a liberal federal judge who
declared them unconstitutional. A new law was passed three years later which
passed the approval of the federal bench by outlawing only homosexual acts. It
would be overturned in 2003 in a landmark case which declared consensual
homosexuality legal in the United States.
1984- First Gay sponsored three day Gay River
Rafting Trip took place through Gray’s Canyon above Green River, Utah.
Mason Rankin |
1986- Howard Johnson, attorney for many Gay causes in Utah, along with
nine others were arrested on charges of selling drugs. Most of the arrests were
made through the work of undercover officer Alan Larsen acting under the name
of Jeff Allen. Larson was introduced as a friend of community member Mason
Rankin, Gay Republican Activist. On 21 Sept 1997 Mason Rankin died of AIDS age 56.
1986 Sunday While
reading the Sunday paper I came upon an article about the Sunstone Symposium in
which I learned the title of Carol Lynn Pearson's book. It was "Goodbye, I
Love You." Seeing the title and knowing it was about her relationship with
her Gay ex-husband who had died of AIDS, I just started sobbing.
1988 At downtown Salt Lake City, reactionary Neo-consevative Lyndon
LaRouche people were registering people to vote. They wanted support on
Proposition 64, LaRouche's initiative, to quarantine people with AIDS. Ben
Williams walked by and said to the petitioners "My God! LaRouche!! How
sickening!" LaRouche, a presidential candidate, was running on a platform
to quarantine Gay people.
1989 "New Horizons" a Gay and Lesbian Social Club was formed by Sue

1993 Salt Lake police are investigating whether a man who shot a
car in Memory Grove over the weekend was motivated by hatred toward Gays.
Several Gay men were standing around a car near 8th Avenue and A Street about 1
a.m. Saturday when a man dressed in black and carrying a shotgun emerged from
between two houses. The man raised the weapon and fired two rounds into the
car, which was parked in an area that is a known meeting place for homosexuals.
"Speculation is that the intent was to shoot the car rather than the
persons nearby, possibly as a warning," according to a police report. Police
K-9 units searched the area without success. Detectives are investigating the
shooting as a possible hate crime, according to the report.

Douglas Koehler - 1994 Times - Picayune (New Orleans, La.) Gay Activists Blast Judge's Decision Killer Given Lighter Sentence The Associated Press Gay activists are incensed over a judge's decision to reduce the sentence of a man who shot a homosexual to death. District Judge David Young reduced David Nelson Thacker's sentence to no more than six years in prison Monday. Thacker, 26, had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, which carries one to 15 years unless a judge decides otherwise. Thacker hunted down 31-year-old Douglas Koehler and shot him in the head a year ago. Prosecutors said it was because Koehler was gay. In reducing Thacker's sentence, the judge said he was
David Nelson - 1994 Denver Post Term cut angers Utah gays Mike Carter The Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY - Utah gays and lesbians were incensed yesterday after a judge reduced the sentence of a man who shot a homosexual to death. Monday, District Judge David Young cut the sentence of David Nelson Thacker, who shot Douglas Koehler in the head in what prosecutors say was a blatant hate crime. Young said Thacker wasn't likely to kill again - so the 1- to 15-year prison term he faced after pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter was "too high." The judge granted a motion by defense attorney Ron Yengich to cut the sentence, ordering Thacker to no more than six years in prison. "I honestly believe in my own mind that Mr. Thacker is not likely to reoffend," he said. More than 100 people attended a state Capitol rally Monday night to protest the ruling and call for Young's removal from the bench. "What Judge Young has said is that it's OK to kill faggots. This is beyond insult," said David Nelson, founder of the Gay and Lesbian Utah Democrats. Said one of Koehler's sisters, Susan Nelson, "I think when you murder someone, you should spend your life paying for that murder." The gay community had cited the slaying in its call for the Utah Legislature to pass a significant hate-crimes law. Community members were furious when prosecutors agreed to plead the case to a manslaughter. And now this, Nelson said. Protesters called for complaints about Young's rulings to be sent to the Utah Judicial Conduct Commission. If that doesn't get Young removed, Nelson said, "We'll get even on Election Day in November 1996, because that's when Judge Young won't be a judge any more." Summit County Attorney Robert Adkins believes sex took place and may have been consensual. Regardless, he said, Thacker became angry and left with a friend to hunt Koehler down. They confronted him in the parking lot, where Koehler was shot once in the head.
- 1994 The Record (Bergen County, N.J.) Reduced Term Blasted In Killing of Gay Man The Sun (Baltimore, Md.) Gay activists protest killer's 6-year sentence Workers World Service Meanwhile In Utah An August 17 mass protest in Salt Lake City united gay-rights, anti-racist and women's groups in a protest against government complicity in anti-gay violence. Last year David Thacker hunted down Douglas Koehler and shot him in the head because he was gay.Utah prosecutors let Thacker plead guilty to second-degree manslaughter instead of murder. But in mid-August District Judge David Young sentenced Thacker to no more than six years in prison, the maximum term for third-degree manslaughter. The National Organization for Women had recently criticized the judge for his racist and sexist rulings. At the August 17 protest at the State Capitol, NOW-Utah spokeswoman Luci Malin said, "I guess he's not only a sexist and racist, but he's a homophobe as well."
- 1996- C. Scott Spinks born February 19, 1956, to Donna May Spinks Slaugh and Clinton Carl Spinks, left this world peacefully, August 17, 1996, surrounded by loving friends. Scott will be remembered as a truly caring person with an intense love for life. He will be greatly missed. Thanks to Dr. Kristen Ries and Maggie Snyder for their continuous support. A Celebration of Life, in honor of Scott, will be held Saturday, August 24, at 1313 South 1300 East, S.L.C. Friends may call between 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made, in Scott's memory, to the AIDS Foundation. [He was a member of the Sacred Faeries known as Jasper Nightshade]
- Joni Weiss Hi Ben, I have been researching... trying to find information about a childhood best friend. I just realized that you knew him. Scott Spinks was my very best friend in the 7th & 8th grade, and I regret losing track of him when I went on to go to Judge Memorial HS for the 9th grade while he continued at Lincoln Jr High School and went on to South HS. Anyway I learned of his passing from a woman who helped care for him at the end (can't remember her name now but she was the younger sister of one of the girls Scott and I hung out with back then). She found me from an article in the trib about a panel I was on about being Trans, and contacted me through the Pride Center... now I've lost track of her as well. Now I'm missing him and wanting to learn as much as I can about him. Can you help? Would you be willing to help me find people who were important to him? I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!
- Ben Williams Scott joined the Sacred Faeries and was known as Jasper Nightshade... He was a sweet man. He died of AIDS in the early 1990s ... I will send you want I have in my journals and archives ... I think the Sacred Faeries helped in on his spiritual journey...I only knew him about a year before he died...
- Joni Thank you Ben. I am so grateful. I'm so sorry he is gone. I knew him as sweet, playful, and funny. He was my first lover/friend. And thank you for your service to the community with your blogs. Your writings of him are the only accounts of him I have ever been able to find. Thank you thank you. If I can ever buy you a beer or a cup of coffee, I would love to do so
- Ben Williams We were a smaller community back then and if people were involved with the things I was I usually have a record of them... I also kept a record of all the people who died of AIDS back then.. It's my moral responsibility to keep a record of them since for what ever reason I was spared when friends and lovers were not
- Joni I have a much better appreciation for what you just said after having been in this community for my short 8 years. I am deeply indebted to you and everyone else who made things happen while I was too afraid to come out. Anyway. thank you Ben. I would love sometime to share some stories of some happy times I had with Scott back in the late 60's into 1970.
- [Journal of Ben Williams] "18 December 1990 Tuesday Scott Spinks came over about 5 for his Medicine Card reading. He had many of the same cards as I do, weasel, ant, badger, and Bear. His others were Swan, Hawk, lizard, Linx and Bat. Scott is a nice man. His Faerie name is Jasper Night Shade." The Social Security death records list Scott as Clinton S Spinks born 19 Feb 1956 in SLC with last residence SLC. Find a grave lists him as Scott P Spinks born born Valentine Day 14 Feb 1956 and died 17 August 1996. He is buried in Miner Basin Cemetery in Moab Utah. There are only 8 graves in that cemetery. 3 of them are his stepbrothers named Buckingham His only seems to marked with a cross Miner Basin is a Ghost Town. His father died just last May 2015 in Moab but his obituary doesnt mention scott just his stepsons. - Joni Thank you for sharing this with me. Brings back some of my own memories of Scott. I never met his siblings but one day we hung out in his older brother's bedroom, listened to the Moody blues and tried smoking pot (the brothers) for the first time. Neither of us were out at the time. His mom was an alcoholic as was mine.
1996 Page: B3 ACLU Wants Senators at Secret Meeting to Step Into
the Light Byline: BY KIMBERLEY MURPHY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The Utah American
Civil Liberties Union wants the state senators who gathered in secret earlier
this year to be identified as part of a lawsuit challenging that meeting. The request, made Friday in 3rd District
Court, is the latest in a series of filings involving the ACLU suit. The
organization claims that in order for the case to move forward, senators ``must
shed their hoods and mount a defense in the light of day.'' ``The suggestion that senators who met
secretly in violation of state law may defend their actions in this lawsuit
anonymously is as repugnant to the laws of Utah and the ideals of democracy as
was the illegal secret meeting itself,'' according to the brief filed with
Judge Dennis Frederick. Frederick refused last month to dismiss the lawsuit,
which claims the Senate violated the state Open and Public Meeting Act when 25
of its 29 members secretly met behind closed doors last January to discuss the
organization of a gay and lesbian support club at East High School. Senate
leaders initially said the meeting dealt with the state's budget and those who
attended were sworn to secrecy. The ACLU, representing three plaintiffs, sued.
Frederick ruled lawmakers can not ``casually ignore'' the constitutional right
for the public to petition its government or attend proceedings and said the suit
should go forward. But the senators have said they intend to appeal the
decision to the Utah Supreme Court. Legislative attorneys also filed an
objection to an order written by ACLU attorneys that filled in the details of
Frederick's ruling. Legislative general counsel Gay Taylor said the lawsuit was
filed against the Utah Senate and 25 as-yet unknown ``John Doe'' senators who
attended the meeting. But the ACLU's version of the judge's order excludes the
individual senators. Taylor, who was not available for comment, wrote he was
worried the wording would allow the ACLU to pursue depositions or actions
against those senators while the remainder of the proceedings against the
Senate were being held in abeyance pending the Supreme Court appeal. It was
that objection that the ACLU was responding to on Friday. ``If they have got something worth saying let
hem say it in the light of day,'' said John Pace, an attorney for the ACLU.
``We're not going to let them perpetuate the secrecy that has characterized the
entire case to this point.'' Senate President Lane Beattie, R-West Bountiful,
did not immediately return a telephone message on Friday. The ACLU asks that Frederick overrule the senators'
objection because otherwise it would `allow the anonymous senators to continue operating
in darkness free of accountability to those who elected them to perform the
people's business.'' The ACLU also
questioned how the case would be able to proceed if the senators aren't named.
For instance, the organization wondered how it should identify the senators in
pleadings and deposition notices, how anonymous senators would testify in
court, and which senators would be bound by any judgment. ``Finally, and most
importantly, attempting to keep hidden the identities of the offending senators
constitutes the most distasteful effort to date of escaping accountability,''
the brief said.

the 3rd Sunday of August. This year,
that falls on August 17th. We will be
meeting out in front of the main gate at 11:00 AM to say "hello" and
will be entering the park shortly after that.
KUTV has a 2 for 1 deal going on that will make admission to the park
very affordable (so pair up and save).
Special thanks to Jesse Dolce for finding this deal for us. We are encouraging people to wear Red to make our community more visible. Red is the color of the pride flag that
represents life. Bring your friends and
come have a great time celebrating Gay Lagoon Day.

2018 ‘Preach
My Gospel’ preaches the gay policy- The church’s hotly disputed November 2015
policy — declaring same-sex Mormon couples “apostates” and generally forbidding
their children from religious rites until they turn 18 — has found a home not
only in the faith’s Handbook for bishops and stake presidents but also in its
training manual for missionaries. The updated “Preach My Gospel,” a field guide
of sorts for proselytizers, contains the following condition that must be met
before missionaries can baptize a minor: “The child’s primary residence is not with
parents who are polygamists or in a same-sex relationship. If one or both of
the child’s parents are polygamists, you must contact the mission president for
additional information. For additional information regarding children of
parents in same-sex relationships, see First Presidency letter, Nov. 13, 2015
(“First Presidency Clarifies Church Handbook Changes,” LDS.org) and “Church Provides
Context on Handbook Changes Affecting Same-Sex Marriages,” Nov. 6, 2015 (www.mormonnewsroom.org).” Addison
Jenkins, a Brigham Young University student and an openly gay Mormon, told
KUER’s Lee Hale that the addition to “Preach My Gospel” appears to be cementing
in place the 2015 policy. That exclusionary decree, he said, essentially told
gay Latter-day Saints: “If you want to be gay and Mormon, OK, but you have to
be Mormon. And you can’t really be gay.” Salt Lake Tribune
